Have you joined ‘The Gentlemen’s League’ yet?

It would be only right to start at the beginning. And so here it is – the beginning.

A lazy afternoon. Nothing interesting catching the eye on the myriad OTT channels. Ending up on Netflix. Up pops a picture of a Korean man pointing his index finger. And the title says ‘The Gentlemen’s League 2’. And the picture dissolves into the program advertisement footage showing what appears to be an audition in progress.

And that was that. I clicked on the program and sat through the first few minutes of it understanding nothing, not the language not the people not the concept not the background. But I sat through wanting to get to the audition part and when I did, there was no looking back.

The premise of the program is simple. It is an extension of its first season. Legendary athletes and sportsmen of South Korea are chosen/selected to form a football club aptly called ‘Eojjoeda FC’, Eojjeoda meaning ‘somehow’. It is an amateur football club managed by the legendary Korean footballer Ahn Jung-hwan (the match-winning goal against Italy in 2002 FIFA World Cup) and coached by another legendary Korean footballer ‘Lion King’ Lee Dong-gook (didn't know any of these men when I began watching. But they have become a beloved part of my entertainment scene now). An audition is being conducted (it is claimed by the hosts of the program to be the world’s first ever sports audition) to choose the members of the football team. And the applicants are champion (World, Olympic, Asian) sportsmen and athletes (retired or active) of lesser known sports (Kabaddi, Lacrosse, Luge, Nordic Combined, Ski jump and many more) in Korea who have the passion and the skills (at least basic) to play football.

And then there starts the ride. I could write pages about the program but I don’t want to give away too much and spoil the joy of first timers discovering the program for themselves. If you are a fan of football and if you enjoy watching reality shows and if your idea of enjoyment is watching good, clean, honest, almost superhuman efforts of human beings attempt to succeed at something that they love, then you would have come to the right place that is ‘The  Gentlemen’s League’. Go ahead and give it a try. You just might fall in love with it.
